HIS NAME IS BRUNO MARS - PINOY!!!

The amazing Bruno Mars

In his Manila concert at the Araneta Coliseum last April 8, 2011, Bruno Mars stated, “Guys, I want you to know one thing: I’m very, very proud to say that I’m a Filipino.”

That declaration stirred national pride among Filipinos as the audience responded with approval and wild cheers.

Shortly after that live performance, I read somewhere on the Internet about someone’s comment regarding Bruno Mars’ statement. He said Bruno Mars said that in a crowd comprising mostly of Filipinos and asked in a sort of discussion that he started on that web page if there was a video or written interview done outside of the Philippines where Bruno Mars made the same declaration. He, however, added that he likes Bruno Mars’ songs.

Joining that sort of discussion, a reader stated Bruno Mars is both of Filipino and Puerto Rican descent and is inclined to say or claim both depending on where the concert is being held (implying, perhaps, that Bruno Mars said that to please the audience).

Bruno Mars, Peter Gene Hernandez in real life, is the son of Bernadette Bayot, a Filipina, and Peter Hernandez, a Puerto Rican.

Objectively, Bruno Mars won’t be his person if he will be seen only as a Filipino. Neither would he be himself if he is seen only as a Puerto Rican. We should all realistically embrace the truth that Bruno Mars is a product of the blending of two beautiful races or nationalities—Filipino and Puerto Rican.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Bruno Mars is a native Hawaiian. And since Hawaii is a state of the U.S.A., he is also an American.

With his songs Just The Way You Are, Grenade, Billionaire, Nothin’ On You, Count On Me, The Lazy Song, etc. being sung by almost everyone and almost everywhere on the planet, Bruno Mars now belongs to the whole world.

Just as how we all love his beautiful voice and music, let us all love and be proud of Bruno Mars for what he is made—just the way he is! And most importantly, as what he has claimed, for being one of us—FILIPINO!

  1. Hey Goddy, welcome back. Glad to read your posts again. Hope you are back for good, man. I missed you already. I also not been blogging so much because of some things I've been busy with. I think I've been using Twitter and Facebook more than my blog..hehehehe. Anyway, I'm glad to read your entry again. Aside from Vincent, its now Bruno. I'm also a fan of Bruno. Did you know that his family are causins of the Gutierrezes in Philippine showbiz?

  3. Hi Joel! Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment! Glad to know you're also a Bruno Mars' fan. Well, he's so very good! I like his voice especially kapag nagpo-falsetto siya (reminds me of Motown sound and Smokey Robison). And, yes, I like his version of Just The Way You Are na a la Spiral Staircase ang dating. I'll embed the video on my blog next time. And he's a prolific songwriter. Ang dami niyang composition at ang gaganda! Ang saya-saya ko tuloy kapag naglalakad ako kasi I always sing his songs especially Just The Way... my most favorite. I guess that song will be the song of the year. Bruno has similarities with Vincent Bueno--both were born and raised outside of the Philippines (although Vincent is full-blooded Filipino and Bruno's half-Filipino). They both started young as far as singing and dancing are concerned. They both compose songs and play various musical instruments. Sana, mag-collaborate sila sa paggawa ng music. And speaking of Vincent, he's in the Phil. My anak-anakan told me that he met Vincent at the tourist restaurant where he works and told me Vincent told him to "tell Tito Goddy I said hi... send my regards to him." And, yes, that Bruno's grandpa and Eddie Gutierrez are cousins was in the news. Nakakatuwa ano! Hey man! Siguro nanood ka ng Paquiao-Mosley bout diyan sa Las Vegas ano! Kakainggit ka!

  7. Hi Page 13! It really sounds "good night". Myrna said it's "Pinoy" but Cris said it's "good night". Anyway, in his video clip where he sang Just The Way... (my favorite version), at the end of his performance, he said, "Thank you L.A., good night!" So, it must really be "good night!" Thanks, Page 13 for dropping by my page! Hope to see you here again.
